The 3 Valleys, traditionally the chalet destination par excellence could lose its grip as two of the biggest catered chalet operators in the area are rumoured ot have dropped upto half of thier chalets. Indeed if the rumours are true, then upto 800beds could be lost, meaning much less availablity and higher prices for next winter. It seems that worst hit wil be Meribel, where for many years increasingly high rents have meant that it no longer makes economic sense to run chalets. A number of small operators have already gone bust this year due to the credit crunch, a lot of owners are going to be left with chalets unrented this winter, and this could herald a return to the traditional ski holiday in a hotel, with customers making the most of cheap flghts into the majority of the ski destinations and the increasing options of short stay and flexible arrivals days on offer at a growing number of ski hotels.
