Flaine, France
Flaine
Situated in the north of the Haute Savoie region at 1600m, Flaine is, depending on your taste, an
attractive modernist resort or an ugly but functional resort. It is virtually traffic-free and
the fact that it was purpose-built means that leisure activities are well incorporated into the
resort. Designed by the celebrated architect Marcel Breuer in the early seventies Flaine is an
interesting blend of concrete and nature, built in a natural bowl where the summits have
magnificent views over the Mont Blanc.
Skiing in Flaine
The skiing area is well positioned in a bowl, with an excellent snow record
and off-piste runs. You’ll have access to over 150km of pistes taking in the resorts of Samöens,
Les Carroz and Morillon and there are well-developed areas for snowboarders. Although the
immediate skiable domain consists mostly of intermediate runs, with a few, short black runs the
off-piste more than makes up for it. Also, in addition to the local area pass, you can get passes
for the 'Le Grand Massif', which takes in the three neighbouring villages. The pistes leading
down to these pretty villages are tree-lined and wonderfully quiet. The lift system has been well
designed so you should experience very few queues.
Flaine - The Resort
There is the usual abundance of bars and restaurants and shops with the token 'English' Pub, the White Grouse, serving Lee's Bitter, Guinness and Newcastle Brown Ale, and a nightclub, Le Diamant Noir. Nonetheless, Flaine is more the domain of the 'serious' skier and the nightlife is not given a high priority. Flaine regularly holds world cup events for both skiing and snowboarding.

Off Piste: There is some excellent off piste in Flaine, although you have to be careful for the
big holes off the Diamant Noir, but try the back country run down Gers to Sixt Fer à Cheval, best
tried with a guide.
