Lech & Zurs, Austria
Lech and Zürs are not only known as the cradle of skiing, but also as untiring pioneers when it comes to innovative improvements in comfort. Thus, Lech Zürs has already been voted the best ski resort in the world for the fifth time in a row, while readers of DSV voted the Arlberg number one ski area in Austria.
While the world’s first “heated chairlift” went into operation on the Schlegelkopfbahn in 2005, almost nothing but “hot bottoms” will be riding around the Lech Zürs ski area in winter 2006/7. In addition to the Hexenboden, Hasensprung, Kriegerhorn, Zürsersee, the Petersboden, Schlegelkopf, Steinmähder and Valfagehr cable cars, the Trittalpbahn and the Seekopfbahn in Zürs will be fitted with comfortable upholstery and heated seats. The latest information on the ski area can be found on the homepage of Skipool .
Anyone who has ever completed a circuit of the White Ring in Lech Zürs knows the legendary Palmen Alpe. Just the thought of it makes one think immediately of “Rudi”, “giant pizza” and the “best sunsets”. All these popular associations are the same; only in future there will be one more distinguishing feature to mark this location: the Palmen Alpe will have a non-smoking eating area. Everyone who enjoys a cigarette after their meal is welcome to smoke at the bar.
“International surveys and top home-grown restaurateurs know that guests increasingly prefer to enjoy meals in restaurants without the smoke. Smoking is already banned by law in countries such as Italy, Ireland and Scotland. In terms of high-quality gastronomy, our landlords are showing a high degree of foresight by not waiting for a ban. As director of the local tourism office, I’m delighted about the voluntary initiative taken by the operator of the Palmen Alpe to set such a good example with Austria’s first smoke-free ski lodge,” says Gerhard Walter, Director of the Lech Zürs Tourism Office.
