Mégève, France
Megève can be found at 1113m in the same region as Mont-Blanc. It is one of the oldest French winter resorts, inaugurated shortly after the First World War. Its a real French village with a medieval town centre with cobbled streets and horse-drawn sleighs. It used to be one of the most fashionable ski resorts in France and is still popular with the French. It is full of charm, local colour and elegance. There are three distinct residential areas: Rochebrune, and the sunnier Mont d'Arbois and Jaillet. The former two are the most convenient for skiing back to the village.
Megève is fairly large and there is a lot to do besides skiing. In fact, it probably offers the most to do of any of the French ski resorts including a casino, four beauty centres, a bridge club, a bowling alley, an open air ice rink, concerts, conferences, etc. Restaurants are mainly French serving high-quality, expensive cuisine to suit Megève’s clientele. If you search for restaurants serving burgers, pizzas and pasta you will find them e.g. The Pallas, Mama Mia, MacDonalds. Likewise the lively nightlife is becoming gradually less formal. Amongst the jazz clubs, casinos and cocktail bars you will find live bands, karaoke and bars with satellite TV. Megève attracts many weekend visitors, hence on Saturdays and Sundays during the season the resort becomes congested with cars and the characteristic charm may not be so apparent.
The skiing is split into 2 areas either side of the resort, both connected by local buses. Megève has many gentle wooded runs surrounded by beautiful alpine scenery. The immediate slopes around Megève attract more beginners and intermediates than experienced skiers. The altitude here is fairly low and so snow cover is unreliable. However the skiing area extends to other resorts in the Mont Blanc Massif including: Chamonix, Combloux, Flumet, Les Contamines-Montjoie, Le Bettex, Les Saisies, Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, Praz-sur-Arly, St Gervais and St Nicolas-de-Veroce. The large number of runs in this extended area ensures that skiers of all levels and abilities can visit Megève. Also for the more experienced skier The International Ski School and the Guides Office offer heliskiing.
