Mayrhofen - Hintertux, Austria PDF Print E-mail
Hintertux and Mayrhofen ski resorts are located in the scenic Zillertal Valley, southeast of Innsbruck in Tyrol province. Linked with the Finkenberg, Rastkogel and Eggalm ski areas, they make up the gigantic Ski-Zillertal 3000 region, with approximately 500kms of superb slopes on offer. The Hintertux Glacier has the added advantage of affording year round skiing.

Mayrhofen is the main resort town, located far beneath the ski runs at just 630m above sea level. It is a beguiling town, permeated with whitewashed mountain houses and wooden balconies, and offering a plethora of interesting shops, from fashionable boutiques to craft workshops.

The pisted runs in Mayrhofen and Hintertux resorts equal 146kms, with another 346kms in the remaining Zillertal area. The division of slopes in Mayrhofen / Hintertux is 27 per cent beginner runs, 59 per cent intermediate and 14 per cent advanced. The longest run in the two resorts is 5.5kms, and the slopes are connected by a system of 46 lifts.

Alternatives to the ski slopes in Zillertal – Hintertux / Mayrhofen include hiking (with or without guides), ice-skating, curling, paragliding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, tobogganing, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and a beauty farm. The resort has an electric night scene, particularly in Mayrhofen, which is known for its wild après-ski. Hintertux is marginally quieter, with some good restaurants and bars at the base of the lifts.

For a change of scenery, there are numerous other villages and the other Zillertal ski resorts close by. A highlight of the area is the ‘150er Tux’, a huge lift to the highest point of the ski area, the Wangelspitz, from where the views are spectacular.

The winter ski season at Zillertal – Hintertux / Mayrhofen runs from December to April, but year round skiing is available on the Hintertux Glacier. Best rates are offered before the Christmas holiday, in mid-January, and in mid-March, and best snow conditions can be enjoyed from early February to mid-March. The easiest route to the resort is to take a plane to Munich, Salzburg, or Innsbruck, and make use of public transport or car hire to reach the resort.
