Morzine, France PDF Print E-mail

PoorBest
Situated just below Avoriaz in the Northern Alps at an altitude of 1000 m. Morzine is a long established resort making up part of the "Portes du Soleil" ski area. It has held on to its traditional village centre, and the atmosphere that goes with it.

Here you will find time-honoured qualities of the Savoyard culture including regional gastronomic delights and the characteristic French pavement café. Even though Morzine is picturesque it is still fairly sizeable and manages to provide all the necessary amenities - an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, exuberant nightlife (in the form of bars and a nightclub) and a good range of shops and non-ski activities.

The resort is set at a relatively low altitude; consequently the lower slopes (including the nursery slopes) are in danger of poor snow coverage. However, the resort does have a good snow record and the slopes at risk are well maintained through the use of snow cannons. For beginners progressing from nursery slopes the best runs are over at Nyon. Morzine itself has a good mixture of intermediate runs, including those that link to neighbouring resorts - Les Gets and Nyon. There are also shuttle buses that will to take you to these resorts. This is a good way to avoid the holiday queues. As the resort is part of the "Portes du Soleil", there is the chance to ski in the Swiss Alps and for advanced skiers there is the unmissable challenge of "The Wall". Remember to take your passport and plan your return to ensure the lifts will be open. Snowboarders may be interested to know that Les Gets regularly plays host to a number of snowboarding competitions and demonstrations. Last season the hands-free electronic lift pass system was introduced (a card which can be topped up with credits. The traditional system is still in operation but the new system may have an impact on queues.
