Sauze d'Oulx, Italy
One of the most notorious ski resorts of the 1980s for its party
attitude, Sauze d’Oulx has managed a turnaround in recent years that
has seen the resort become not just a place for late night revelry, but
a competent and well maintained ski resort with access to just under
400kms of ski runs.
Sauze d’Oulx is a buzzing village situated among four other resorts
which make up the Vialettea area. A blend of marvelous sunshine,
traditional 16th century Italian architecture and some great party
facilities make this resort an appealing choice for those looking for
an animated experience.
The resort of Sauze d’Oulx is perfectly suited to skiers at an
intermediate level, who get 50 per cent of the slopes. Beginners get 29
per cent of the runs, with the more advanced receiving 21 per cent. Due
to its position, Sauze d’Oulx has access to 146 slopes and a total of
400kms of runs. These are all serviced by 92 lifts operating between
1,350m and 2,800m, and managing 70,900 skiers per hour. The total
vertical descent measures 1,450m at this resort, which sits at 1,510m.
There is a further 15kms of cross-country skiing plus a snowboard park
at Sauze d’Oulx.
For an alternative ski location, try one of the other nine resorts
which are completely linked to the resort of Sauze d’Oulx; four are
part of the Vialettea ski domain. These include the well known resorts
of Claviere Italy’s oldest, and Sestriere, most of the 1997 World
Championships and one of the better resorts in the area.
The season runs from November to April, with the best conditions in
early March. Cheap rates are offered until mid-December and towards the
end of April. Sauze dOulx is 80kms from Turin International Airport,
the nearest to the resort with a short train journey direct to the
station at Oulx and bus service to the resort.
