St Anton am Alberg, Austria
St Anton am Arlsberg fits into the category of one of the world’s
premier ski resorts, on a par with such great names as Chamonix and
Zermatt. It is favoured with expert skiers and renowned for its powdery
slopes, moguls and superb off-piste routes. Its proximity to Innsbruck
(100kms) makes it easily accessible by road, rail or air
transportation.
St Anton am Arlberg is characterised by 50 meticulously manicured ski
slopes, which are designed for all levels of ability and (combined with
the rest of Arlberg’s slopes) span a mind-boggling 440kms. The resort’s
longest run is 10kms, and it boasts 82 high-tech cable cars and lifts.
Less experienced skiers are advised to stick to the gentler pistes at
lower altitudes; experts will enjoy the runs on the Galzig and Valluga
peaks.
If skiing is not your thing, St Anton am Arlberg is nevertheless an
excellent choice for a winter getaway, with all kinds of other pastimes
on offer. Try hiking, tobogganing, curling, horse-drawn sleigh rides,
indoor tennis and squash, and bowling. Also of interest is the swimming
complex, featuring indoor swimming, saunas, an ice-skating rink and
fitness centre.
St Anton’s après-ski scene is an additional attraction, with several
lively bars, live music venues and discos. The resort village is
well-equipped with shops of all description, a children’s ski school, a
nursery and babysitting facilities. Lodging is provided by a range of
luxury and more affordable hotels, guesthouses, pensions and
apartments.
If you want to explore some other ski venues in the area, check out
Lech and Zurs, only a bus ride away. Innsbruck, 100kms east, is known
for its fabulous architecture, and presents a seemingly endless range
of cultural, recreational and nightlife possibilities.
The ski season at St Anton am Arlberg runs from late November to April,
with cheaper rates offered in the beginning and towards the end of the
season, and in mid-January. The easiest way to reach the resort is by
flying to Innsbruck and taking the Skibus the rest of the way.
