Whistler - Blackcomb, Canada
Situated not far north from Vancouver and easily accessible, Whistler is one of the premier ski resorts in the world, with a huge amount of terrific terrain including special areas for novices and experts, ideal snow coverage and stunning mountain scenery.
Transportation to Whistler
Vancouver International Airport, 120kms south of Whistler, receives flights from all around the globe, and shuttle bus services from the airport run to and from Whistler. A Helijet service is also on offer. Greyhound buses are another option and connect the airport to downtown Whistler. Highway 99 runs from the airport to Whistler; the journey is 115kms and takes around 2 hours by car.
Whistler is flanked by two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, which together make up the largest ski area in North America, featuring state-of-the-art lift systems and plenty of modern facilities. The skiing village of Whistler is located in the valley between the two mountains and is full of ski-related services, shopping opportunities, art galleries and even a museum.
The 213 pistes at Whistler/Blackcomb drop down a 1,632-metre fall, and the broad range of terrain caters to all levels of ability. Cross-country fans will find 45kms of skiing trails and X-sport aficionados are sure to enjoy the excellent snowboard terrain park at Blackcomb. Hiking is popular in both summer and winter, with a vast network of trails.
Out and about
Leaving the slopes, visitors can take a scenic plane ride around the region or even catch a float plane to Vancouver and back. Set in a stunning harbour and with high mountains in the background, Vancouver boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere, good shopping and a bustling nightlife. Not far away, Vancouver Island is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and is also home to British Columbia’s attractive capital, Victoria.
Apart from skiing, there are plenty of other outdoor activities on offer during all seasons. Visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, heli-skiing and dog-sledding in winter, while golf, mountain-biking and horseback riding are available in the summer. Whistler Village is home to many lively and exciting après-ski activities, with hordes of restaurants, cafés, bars and pubs to enjoy after a long day on the slopes as well as an interesting museum.
Safety issues
Even though the access roads to Whistler are good, driving on the winding mountain roads is a lot more challenging than driving over flat land. This greatly increases the chances of having an accident. Skiing and snowboarding, and the countless other summer and winter sports can also pose hazards to your health and accidents do happen daily. We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance when visiting Whistler.
